Why we brought back 6.81b

Dota 2 has been in continuous development for well over a decade. That is a good thing: the game is deeper, better balanced and far better explained than it used to be. But it also means the game that thousands of us learned no longer exists anywhere. Patches are not archived. You cannot go back.

6.81b is the patch The International 4 was played on. June 2014. 108 heroes. No talent trees, no neutral items, no backpack, no Aghanim's Shard. A courier you had to buy. A river you fought over because that was where the runes were.

We rebuilt the server side of it so that patch can be played properly again — not in a lobby against bots, but the way it was meant to work.

What actually works

This is not a single-player curiosity. The backend is a full Game Coordinator reimplementation, and the whole path works end to end:

Matchmaking. You queue, a match forms, a dedicated server boots on demand, and everyone is dialled into it automatically. Same flow as the real thing.
A rating that means something. Everyone starts at 1000. Teams are balanced by skill before the game starts, not by pick order, and the ladder is public.
Multiple modes with independent queues. All Pick, Random Draft, Single Draft and Mid Only each fill separately, so a Mid Only 1v1 can start while All Pick is still gathering.
Bot games for when there aren't ten people awake.

What it is not

It is not a mod, and it does not touch the Dota 2 you already have. You download a separate, self-contained copy of the 2014 client that lives in its own folder and talks to our servers instead of Valve's. Your live Dota 2 install, your inventory and your MMR are untouched and unaffected. Nothing is injected into the official game.

It is free. There is no shop, no cosmetics, no donations, no ads. Nobody makes money here — this is a preservation project run by people who wanted to play this patch again.

Being honest about the state of it

The population is small and growing. Some evenings a full 5v5 fills in a couple of minutes; some evenings it does not, which is exactly why Mid Only and bot games exist. If you queue and nothing happens, you are not doing it wrong — there just aren't ten people right now. Bring a friend and that stops being true faster than you would think.

Some of the older modes are less tested than All Pick. If something breaks, tell us on Discord; it usually gets fixed the same week.

Playing

Get Dota — sign in through Steam, download the client, queue. The sign-in exists only to verify that the Steam account is yours; we never see your password and nothing is posted to your profile.
